Speech Therapy is treatment that focuses on improving a person’s speech and language skills. It helps individuals of all ages overcome communication disorders (pragmatics and social skills), speech difficulties (articulation and phonology), fluency disorders (stuttering and stammering), voice disorders, language disorders. cognitive communication (executive function skills), and literacy difficulties (both oral and written). Therapy is administered through various exercises, techniques, and interventions tailored to their needs. These intervention treatments must be administered by a licensed SLP.
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), should have a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Sciences and Disorders. They must be licensed in their respective state in order to practice (Fl Department of Health in the case of Florida). Ideally they will also have their national license through the American Speech and hearing Association (CCC-SLP).
Speech Therapy can benefit individuals of all ages, including preschoolers, children, adolescents (13-18), adults, and geriatric populations. As clients grow, treatment goals should expand to encompass the skills they need to interact in the world. For example, goals should support academic challenges for school age children while goals for adolescents may start to focus on transitioning into the workplace or higher education.

Speech-language therapy in Florida can begin without a referral; however, I am an out-of-network insurance provider. If you plan to submit for insurance reimbursement, your plan may require a doctor’s order for “speech-language evaluation and treatment.”. Let's talk more to figure out the best plan of action.
Standard sessions are 60 minutes., but it depends on the individual's needs, intensity of intervention, and the specific goals of therapy. This time includes direct therapy as well as either (a) 1-2 minutes of transition time if in the schools or (b) 5-10 minutes of caregiver training and home program demonstration.
The frequency of speech therapy sessions depends on the severity of the case, intensity of therapy required, and the treatment plan developed by the Speech-Language Pathologist. Sessions may range from 1-2 times a week. The frequency of sessions usually decreases gradually with progress. You will collaborate with your therapist about the frequency that meets the level of support you need.
